It’s important you know how and when our policies may cover you and/or your passengers in the event of an incident. The following is an overview of how our insurance policies work.
You can view the Certificates of Insurance here.
*These policies do not apply to NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, livery, or Transportation Charter Permit drivers on the platform, who are subject to state and local requirements to carry their own commercial auto insurance.

Coverage when the app is off
Lyft does not have a policy that applies when your app is off. You should contact your personal auto insurer in this case.
If you rented a car through Express Drive, the standard auto insurance in the rental agreement applies.
Coverage when the app is on and driver is receiving rides
Lyft maintains third-party liability insurance for covered accidents, if your personal insurance does not apply, of at least*:
- $50,000/person for bodily injury*
- $100,000/accident for bodily injury*
- $25,000/accident for property damage*
*For covered accidents in Arizona and Nebraska, third-party liability insurance is $25,000/per person for bodily injury; $50,000/accident for bodily injury and $20,000/accident for property damage, consistent with state requirements. Lyft does not procure insurance for rides with (i) Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) drivers originating in the five boroughs of New York City and specific NY counties (Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Dutchess, Ulster, and Rockland), and (ii) livery and/or Transportation Charter Permit (TCP) drivers countrywide. Coverage when the app is on and driver is picking up a passenger/during a ride
Lyft maintains the following insurance for covered accidents:
- In most markets, at least $1,000,000 for third-party auto liability coverage (these limits are lower and/or not procured in certain markets, exceptions noted below)
- First-party coverages, which may include uninsured motorist coverage, underinsured motorist coverage, PIP, MedPay, and/or Occupational Accident coverage
- If a driver obtains comprehensive and collision on their personal auto policy, Lyft then maintains contingent comprehensive & collision coverage up to the actual cash value of the car ($2,500 deductible)

Lyft does not procure insurance for rides with (i) TLC drivers in the five boroughs of New York City and specific NY counties (Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Dutchess, Ulster, and Rockland), and (ii) livery and/or TCP drivers countrywide. TLC, livery, and TCP drivers procure their own policies consistent with state and local requirements.
Express Drive coverage
Express Drive insurance coverage depends on which of the following four periods you're in when an incident occurs:
- Personal driving: You’re offline (i.e. not in driver mode).
- Waiting for a request: When the app is in driver mode and you have not received a ride request.
- Picking up a passenger: This includes the time from accepting a ride request until you pick up your passenger.
- Ride in progress: This includes the time from pickup of a passenger until the time the ride has ended.
